We were bused today from Lisbon to Porto, with an interesting stop in the town of Coimbra, home of the oldest university in Portugal. It's a lovely place, and the jewel of the crown was the inside of the library -- but we weren't allowed to take my pictures inside. One of the things about this very old library is that it has bats! You can imagine how that went over with John. They actually allow them to live in the library because they eat bugs, and we are told that it's only a selected set of sterilized bats, because otherwise it would be overrun. So my question is, how to they keep other bats from getting in? You can check out the story here http://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/bats-act-as-pest-control-at-two-old-portuguese-libraries-9950711/. There's also a nice picture of the library. When Salazar was dictator of Portugal, he made this old university over in his image, but it has survived anyway. The students here still wear academic robes. I'm attaching a few random pictures from outside the library.
We have some camera problems which are making pictures a bit out of sync. The camera doesn't show anything in the view screen while you're trying to take the picture, though you can look at it after the fact. It is now a real point and shoot camera. The iPhone pictures don't allow for much editing of any kind while taking the picture, and are not moving to the photo stream Ina timely manner. So perhaps were having more fun than it looks like.
I just tried to read this over for typos, and realized there's not much to it, but I'm falling asleep as I type and drooling onto the iPad doesn't seem to do it a lot of good.
