Second day in Lisbon

We were supposed to visit Sintra and some beach towns today, but not enough people signed up and it was cancelled. This morning we again went to the wonderful breakfast at the hotel, where we consumed enough calories to build a railroad this afternoon, but instead got on the metro and went to the Calouste Gulbenkian museum. Its claim to fame is that at the time of the Russian revolution it bought a large part of the impressionist collection of the Hermitage. While it's a very nice collection, those Ruskies held back the best stuff.  One of the best things in this museum (paintings) but then we know my taste, is a Burne-Jones of a group of women looking at their reflections in a pond.
They have some illuminated editions of the Quran, which surprised me because I thought Muslims didn't do likenesses of anything. Maybe I believed another tour guide somewhere about that.
They also have some Egyptian glass containers from the 12th or 13th century.
And then there is the wonderful room with art nouveau jewelry and stuff.

As I was getting ready to leave the hotel this afternoon, I realized that I had lost 40 euros. On thinking about it, I was pretty sure it was at the museum. I called back there, and believe it or not, I was right, and someone turned it in. John isn't feeling well so he stayed at the hotel while I returned to the museum to collect my notes. Everybody I talked to on the phone before the person at the museum said it was highly unlikely I would find it , but people are good.   What I didn't think to do was bring the mini iPad on this trip so I could upload yesterday's blog, but I think I will upload this one now while I'm here.
