SLOW SUNDAY IN NEW YORK

Martha told us that she wanted to go out for brunch today, but by 11:30 she still wasn't feeling like she wanted to leave the house, so we had some cereal, played with the cats and then John and I headed off to take a walk in Central Park. Here's a little street art from the way over. A heavily decorated bicycle on W 86th St., a bay window that is apparently permanently propped up by this girder, and a bus espousing every possible liberal idea that his owner thought might cause people to give him money. I had wanted to walk all the way around the park, but John didn't want to do that and essentially kept me from doing it, either. It's only about 5.5 miles around the park, and I thought that would be fun. He's promising me that we'll get up and do it in the morning tomorrow, though why you'd want to do that when you have nothing else to do today escapes me.
But he just wanted to wander around in the park. I've come to realize that I don't really like aimless wandering when I walk, at least not somebody else's idea of aimless wandering. But we did get to stop on the way at an antique shop and a flea market. I only took one picture at the flea market. It's a guy who sells spices and teas. I hope the resolution is high enough to read some of the labels.
While we were in Central Park we went to Fort Belvedere, which is a place we've never actually been before. Is took this picture of an algae-ridden lake from the top of the fort. Also of interest the sign about how to watch birds.
We also saw some people playing a sort of swordfighting game. They kept shouting "Are you alive?" One of the women came over to talk to us and said this was a group tha met frequently to play. The rules are simple. If you get killed (however that happens -- they use foam bats for swords) you are dead until the person who killed you is killed. Then you are alive again. And somehow you keep track of this until there is only one person left alive, who is the winner. She said it can go on for hours. It kind of looked like fun. And it goes on in the real world, not on the internet. Amazing!!!
Our final stop on the way home was at the Cuban restaurant Cafe con Leche. Mmmmmmmm! I had shrimp in coconut sauces and John had flounder in lime. Plus fried plantains and rice and beans. Delicious.
